Description: TechnoServe is a non-profit organization working with entrepreneurs in the developing world to build businesses that break the cycle of poverty. We provide the skills and knowledge entrepreneurs need to create or expand successful businesses. José Adán López of Nicaragua is just one example of a successful TechnoServe-supported entrepreneur. José Adán lives in area that was hit hard by Nicaragua's bloody civil war. The community was desolate and devastated, but farmers there had a natural advantage -- the area is ideally suited for coffee growing. With support from TechnoServe, José Adán established a coffee farm and formed a coffee cooperative with other local coffee farmers. In 2000, the cooperative moved to the production of lucrative specialty coffee for sale to global markets. TechnoServe helped the cooperative refine its harvesting and processing techniques in order to meet the high standards of global buyers. Today José Adán is able to provide his family with opportunities he never could have dreamed of. He is a leader in his community and has brought hope back to this once desolate place.
